Guide to bonding lightweight panels: How important are waterproof and heat-resistant adhesives?

The straightforward answer: waterproof and heat-resistant bonding of the core panels and the surface are very important. 

You might not notice it at first glance, but this is a crucial difference in quality when it comes to lightweight panels: the method used to bond the core board to your chosen surface. In van conversions in particular, this often makes the difference between satisfaction and frustration. The elements should:

  • be glued with a water-resistant adhesive
  • be glued with a heat-resistant adhesive up to 135 degrees Celsius

Why is it advisable to use a waterproof adhesive to bond the core panel to the surface when working with lightweight panels?

A waterproof bond between the surface and the core panel ensures that the elements do not swell as quickly when they come into contact with moisture. And moisture is bound to occur from time to time – particularly when travelling and living in a camper van:

  • Damp is caused by fluctuations in the climate.
  • Damp areas are caused by showering in the vehicle.
  • Water may occasionally leak from a leak.

👉 Important:

  • Waterproof-glued panels do not swell as quickly.
  • So you can use it to build durable furniture and make more versatile use of the panels.

For example, if the HPL finish you have chosen is bonded to the core panel with a waterproof adhesive and the panel itself is also moisture-resistant, you can use it to build a bathroom or shower room and use the panel without hesitation for kitchen furniture.

Why is it important to use a heat-resistant adhesive to bond the panel and the surface in multiplex panels?

We're sure you’ve experienced this: especially in summer, or when it’s nice and warm outside, the car’s interior can quickly get really hot. Sometimes the sun beats down on the seats, and sometimes there’s nowhere to park the car in the shade. Heat in the car is a daily occurrence, particularly if you spend a lot of time travelling in the south or in desert regions.

In winter, it’s the other way round: you’re sitting comfortably in the van, the auxiliary heater is rumbling away and the vent is blowing hot air straight onto the fronts of the cupboards. That gets warm too.

👉 Important:

  • Surfaces bonded to the core panel using heat-resistant adhesive do not detach from the backing board when exposed to high temperatures inside the vehicle.
  • A heat-resistant adhesive prevents unsightly blisters from forming on the surface.

What exactly are waterproof and heat-resistant adhesives? What do you need to bear in mind?

It is always best to ask about the method used to bond the surface to the plywood before making a purchase decision.

  • Lightweight panels with an HPL surface should be bonded with PUR adhesive!
  • Lightweight panels with real wood veneer should be bonded with Kaurit

The reasons why:

  • PUR hot-melt and Kaurit bonding are waterproof.

White glue is used in many other types of panels. It is not 100 per cent waterproof.

  • PUR hot-melt and Kaurit are heat-resistant adhesives.

A PUR adhesive can withstand temperatures of up to 135 degrees Celsius before the heat causes it to liquefy again. The commonly used white glue liquefies at just 60–70 degrees Celsius. When that happens, the surface slowly but surely peels away from the base panel, and you’ll have to rebuild your furniture all over again. And temperatures of 60° Celsius are easily reached inside a vehicle.

Kaurit is a two-component adhesive, including a hardener, which is pressed for 35 seconds at 90° Celsius. It is used for bonding real wood veneers to multiplex panels. Once Kaurit has cured, the adhesive never reactivates. And, like PUR hot melt, Kaurit is also waterproof.

 

👉 Conclusion:

How well you bond the surface to the lightweight panel will go a long way towards determining whether you’ll enjoy your campervan conversion for years to come. It’s worth bearing that in mind:

  • PUR bonding of HPL surfaces to the core panel
  • Kaurit for bonding real wood veneers to the core panel
  • White glue is not particularly suitable for bonding panels in van fit-outs.
